First case of Corona virus disease confirmed in Kenya
The Ministry Of Health through Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has confirmed its first case of the Coronavirus(COVID-19) in Nairobi,Kenya . The case was confirmed yesterday on the 12th March 2020 , four months after the beginning of the outbreak in China in December 2019
The case is of a Kenyan Citizen lady who was returning back to the country from the United States of America via London on 5th March 2020.She was confirmed positive by the National Influenza Centre Laboratory located at the National Public Health Laboratories of the Ministry of Health.
The CS confirmed that the government had traced all the contacts of the patient since her arrival in Kenya and took the chance to remind Kenyans that most people who become infected may experience only mild illness and recover easily , but the disease can be more severe in others, especially the elderly and persons with other chronic illnesses .
He also reminded Kenyans to remain vigilant as the risk if the spread is high and advised them to take the following precautionary measures :
- Maintain basic hand and respiratory hygiene, and safe food practices.
- Avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections.
- In addition, anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as fever, coughing, difficulty in breathing and sneezing with a history of recent travel to any of the affected countries is advised to go to the nearest health facility for assessment and prompt management.
- In addition, anyone with recent history of travel to the affected countries or who have come in close contact with confirmed case are strongly advised to self- quarantine for 14 days and promptly report to the nearest health facility in case they develop any of the above symptoms.
